Partner Support For Guys

Jul 9, 2024

Once your partner has missed a period, everything can change – fast. What happens next may be her decision, but most women really care where their partner is coming from.  Partner support can be incredibly valuable in an unplanned or surprise pregnancy situation.

Here are a few steps to making the best choice for both of you – together.

    • Make sure she’s pregnant. Offer to go with her to support her when she makes her appointment(s).
    • Learn about pregnancy and pregnancy options. Although she’s carrying the baby, suddenly, you are both parents. What does that mean to you and your future goals?
    • Be a good listener.  Listening to her as she works through her thoughts & feelings can be an incredible way to support your partner. Being a safe person for her to say out loud how a surprise pregnancy impacts her could help her find peace of mind as she processes her feelings.
    • Share your thoughts & feelings with your partner. If you aren’t sure how to start, say something like, “When you told me your period was late, I felt __________. Or start with something like, “Now that I’ve had a little time to think about it, & hear what you are saying, I feel _______________”.
    • Let your partner know how important she is to you.  Resist any feelings you might have to pressure her about the pregnancy or to emotionally check out of the situation. Instead, commit to exploring your options together and getting whatever help you need to make your relationship stronger than ever.
Find someone you can talk to
