WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE MORNING AFTER PILL & THE ABORTION PILL?
The use of the abortion pill, not to be confused with the morning-after pill, has been steadily increasing for first-trimester abortions. Some healthcare professionals are concerned that these pills are being marketed as a quick fix. Additionally, there is growing concern that minimal medication information is being given to pregnant women. It is important to understand some key differences in these medications.
The Morning After Pill and the Abortion Pill may seem similar, but they have different uses. In some cases, women mistakenly believe the Morning After Pill works like the Abortion Pill. This information is offered for educational purposes to clarify the differences between the two medications.
The Morning After Pill
The Morning After Pill, also known as Plan B, is an emergency contraceptive that can be used after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure. This pill should be taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex. It contains a high dose of hormones that prevent the sperm and egg from meeting. If fertilization has already occurred, the pill will create an environment that prevents the fertilized egg from implanting in the uterine wall. It’s important to note that this pill will not affect an established pregnancy or an implanted egg.
The Abortion Pill
The Abortion Pill is really two pills taken at different times. It is effective only if you are actually pregnant. The Abortion Pill can be used up to 10 weeks after your last known period. The first pill taken blocks progesterone to the baby, causing the baby to die. The second pill, taken up to 72 hours later, will cause the baby to be expelled from the uterus.
Possible Side Effects
Both medications have reported experiences of severe cramping. The Morning After Pill can also cause irregular periods, delayed ovulation, nausea, and cramps. The Abortion Pill can have possible dangerous side effects such as heavy bleeding*, cramping, possible hemorrhaging, and incomplete abortion.
